Censor This

Today I saw a student make it into Myspace and I did a bit of investigating to find out how they are doing it. Apparently the student installed something called [CENSORED] 6.77. After doing this the computer was able to go directly to myspace and youtube by entering the url in the browser.

What is [CENSORED] 6.77? Read this description carefully…there is a bit of irony in this being used in K-12 schools, but what is even more fascinating is that the global community of developers and volunteers is fighting against tyranny and censorship, in China and American public schools. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, China and America together–global censors in parallel.

Should we allow tools like Freegate in schools and what role does digital citizenship play? Consider that some do NOT believe that digital citizenship is a REAL response.

Freegate is an anti-censorship software for secure and fast Internet access…[CENSORED] is part of DynaWeb technologies. DynaWeb enable users to evade Internet censorship and to visit websites that are otherwise blocked. DynaWeb was first launched in March, 2002. It is developed and maintained by volunteers and personal contributions, and has enjoyed great popularity among users in China and Iran, despite of the various efforts to stop its spread by the governments in these countries.

Dynamic Internet Technology (DIT) announced today its discovery of Skype’s further cooperation with the Internet censorship in China, apparently in an effort to stop the spread of DIT’s popular anti-censorship tool.

Note that you can also find FreeGate as part of the GIFC Anti-Censorship 2 bundle:

GIFC Anti-Censorship Tools Bundle includes five popular anti-censorship client software packages developed by the members of Global Internet Freedom Consortium. First, UltraSurf: a flagship anti-censorship product by UltraReach Internet Corp. Second, [CENSORED]: an anti-censorship software by Dynamic Internet Technology Inc. Third, GTunnel: a Windows application that works as a local HTTP or SOCKS proxy server, by Garden Networks for Freedom of Information Inc. Fourth, FirePhoenix: a virtual private network (VPN) based anti-censorship tool by The World’s Gate, Inc. (www.edoors.com). And last, GPass: a secure Internet access mechanism by The World’s Gate, Inc.

Version 2 includes [CENSORED] to 6.76 which enhances anti-censorship functionality; GPass to 3.4.4 which improved support for Kaspersky, WMP11, and Skype 3.6; Improved support for Maxthon, Safari, and Tor tunnel; and UltraSurf to 8.9 which also enhances anti-censorship functionality.

Anti-censorship tools…does your school district want to invest in the same things China does to censor or digital citizenship? Something to ponder.
